Default Fringe Element - Oh Deer - Stephanie Field

Cant help but think Stephanie's article about deer problems in the August 09 issue may be a result of my misfortune. Or just good timing. 85% of bike/deer strikes are fatal. I guess I was really lucky. For the first time in recent years deers are being seen on Long Islands north shore where it used to be only the south shore. I actually saw a deer on my block this winter at 6AM which is unheard of. Just keep your eyes peeled for these critters....it hurts when you explode one. Botz

I got my issue on Saturday and as soon as I saw the article it was like rubbing salt into your wounds. As you said, keep your eyes open!

Didn't know about the 85% fatality rate! Had my one and hopefully only meeting with a deer on 349 south (the only road into Suwannee) at about 2am four years ago. The critter came out of a ditch on my right and was just behind the headlight beam, didn't see it untill the head passed under my right handlebar and hit the bike right at the frame and right floorboard. At 55mph the bike wobbled about 3 times and strightened out, just lucky I guess. Sheered the 1/2 inch shoulder bolt on the floorboard and left it standing stright up. The last 15mi of the trip home was at about 30mph.
