| | When you pay as much as you do for a Harley you can expect to be ripped off on the service too. They figure you can afford to overpay for a bike you can afford to overpay for it's service.

| | I've been on the road from South Florida since the 29th of Oct and haven't been reading the AIM message boards. Having put 3100 miles on my bike I scheduled an oil service at a dealership in Ca. Bottom line $214.00, nothing but oil in all holes and a filter. Oh, they did wash it! Put that on your credit card and pay it.

| | Twally......how was the X country trek? You go solo or with a group? I should be following a similiar route in June. Heading south along the east coast then turning right toward Cali. Botz $214.00 for an oil change is F***ing ridiculous! Later. BOtz

| | Botz, Just returned yesterday. 6700 miles solo. Great ride. Basically, south Fl to I-40, west to Ca. with some sights along the way. North in Ca from Bakersfield to 49 and the El Dorado area. More North then east to Napa and then the coast. Across the Golden Gate Bridge and south along the coast to Half Moon Bay. West to Blythe and I-10 back to I-75 and then south. $214.00 is a fact. Service is necessary with that many miles. If you want to know more let me know. Good luck. Ride safe.

| | Mike,
Sorry about the delay in answering. Harley FLHTI, 2005, stock with the exception of a radio, I added, and cruise control, that the dealer installed. I travelled the end of Oct and 1st of Nov so heat was not a problem. I live in South Fl so I was more worried about cold than heat. I went solo. It's difficult to make suggestions because we each have our our riding style, number of miles per day, stops, types of roads etc. If you have a general idea where your going and when, research the weather on the net for those areas and the time of year to get and idea what conditions you might encounter. Have the bike checked over, make sure the battery and tires are in good shape, load up and go. I'm planning another long one, not sure where, but I'm going. Ride safe and ride lots!!!!

| | PS: Mike,
Depending on the length of the trip, have the bike serviced on the way. A professional eye could prevent problems down the road, no pun intended.

| | twally,
Thanks for the info. I agree its tough to make recommendations. Just figured I'de ask. I figure to do 500+ a day unless I get side tracked. Ive done 800mi. in a day without much problem so I should be good to go. Gonna throw some new rubber on before I go. Thanks. Mike

| | Maybe now that the biker craze is going away Harley will have to cater a lttle more to their customers. I was at my local dealer recently and the place is full of used and new bikes.

| | The dealers may well have to actually start "dealing" instead of just selling. Demand in my area (midwest) is definitely not what it was a short while ago. EPA concerns are preventing some people from buying 2007's that will apparently be much harder and more expensive to modify; plus voiding warranty's, facing possible fines etc. Add to that that the 07's with the 96" motor really don't make any more power than the 88's; and there is no real reason to trade unless your old ride is needing mechanical attention that you don't want to do.
Even a local shop here that built ground-up bikes has not sold a new one in several months. He's doing most of his business now in repair and maintainance, or accessories.
All the attention given on the media (tv), new epa regs, and HD building more and more bikes, is going to bite the industry in the a--, I think.
