Default Hello From W'boro, Virginia

My name is Keith and we just moved here from Naples, Italy. We ride a 1995 FLHT Standard that I bought new in November, '94.

I've been out of the Harley loop for the past six years and perused a few HD forums trying to find a "good fit". I've always enjoyed AIM for its format and content, so I decided to join.

Five years ago I retired from the Navy after 27 years. At the time we were stationed in Rota, Spain, and enjoyed touring western Europe. There were many weekend trips to Portugal, southern Spain and a few longer vacations included France and Belgium. During that time I also picked up a eurospec '99 YZF100R "Thunderace" and got hooked on sportbikes.

My wife started working for the Navy Exchange while we were in Spain and after my retirement she was offered a promotion and job in Keflavik, Iceland. We could only take one bike with us, so I had the Harley shipped back to the states and entrusted it to the care of my best friend of 25+ years. I signed the title over to him and we signed a written contract between us to ensure our friendship stayed intact!

After closing the base down in Iceland, my wife was selected for a new job in Naples, Italy, and we were off again to live on "the Continent". Circumstances prevented me from shipping the Harley to Italy, so I got by with my T'Ace for the three years we spent there.

Finally, in August of this year we returned to the states and settled into the house we bought back in February. Two weeks later, Kevin rode the Harley up to our house and handed the title back over to me.

The bike and our friendship not only survived, but both thrived! During his guardianship, Kevin installed several performance mods as well as handing the bike over with a fresh set of tires and fluids! Our contract called for splitting costs on mods and maintenance, but Kevin refused any compensation stating something to the effect of "letting him use the bike for six years being worth every penny he spent". Now that's what I call a true "Shipmate"!

MODs made by me:
-White Bros lowering kit (front), 12" OEM air shocks (rear)
-Integrated garage door opener
-OEM AM/FM/Cassette HU
-OEM Cruise Control
-10" Windscreen
-Engine chrome kit
-SE Cam
-SE Air filter kit
-SE Regulator
-Yost Power Tube
-Timesaver pushrods
-OEM 12V power point
-King Tour Pack (Elvis' Place)
-OEM Driver's back rest
-Wiring for HD trickle charger
-Fuel line quick disconnect
-Garmin Zumi 450
-Misc doo-dads that I've forgotten

Kevin's MODs:
-SE Heads
-SE 0.010" Pistons
-True Dual Exhaust (From the heads to the tailpipes)
-Tour Pack liner
-New Battery
-New tires
-Fresh fluids
-Repacked wheel bearings
-Upgraded Timesaver Pushrods
-Probably more he didn't tell me about

The bike turned over 60K miles last week and still looks like it just drove off the showroom floor.

If you've managed to read this far without falling asleep from boredom, I'll tell you my next upgrades will be suspension and brakes. Meanwhile, I'll close for now and get out to the garage; it's still a mess from moving in!

Welcome to the American Iron Harley forum family and glad you joined up.

Sounds like you have had some amazing places to ride and have a good friend here to keep an eye on your Harley (tough job!)

Can you post some photos here of the various places you have ridden?

Buzz - Unfortunately many digital pictures I had were on a laptop which was stolen, but fortunately we still have many old-fashioned paper photos which I'll have to scan and then post. Here's two I have handy on this laptop; the first was taken just north of The Mackinac Bridge during a trip I made circumnavigating Lake Michigan from Norfolk, VA via Green Bay, WI and Traverse City, MI. I flew back from Iceland and my friend was kind enough to let me "borrow his bike"

The second was taken during a track day at the Jerez GP Circuit in Spain. I consider myself a motorcycle enthusiast first and Harley rider second. Riding a high speed superbike on a GP track (even though I sucked at it) was one of the best learning experiences I ever had. Besides being an MSF instructor, I also went on to get my Military Sportbike Instructor certification.

Hammerhead - Yup, there's a Naples in Italy as well. There's also a Toledo in Spain! I think the bike had 48K on it when I turned it over to my buddy. He also has an '88 (maybe '89) Heritage Softail that's modded and customized pretty nice. He barely rode it the entire time he had my bike, in fact, as he handed over the keys he remarked that he'll probably pick up a touring bike next year to replace this one.

Thanks for the warm welcomes, everyone

Welcome to the site. Congrats on your retirement. Any time after 20 years it is more than deserved. I've got 7 and some change left before I hit my 20. Again welcome and hope you hang around a bit.

I'll tell you like I tell all former service members....Thank you, if it wasn't for you all paving the way we wouldn't of had a path to walk on and one to continue paving for those who follow behind us. I try to enjoy it...I have a few goals set for the time being, picking up MSgt, getting my company started and going to Afghanistan. Afghanistan will have to wait I just returned to my family after 2 1/2 years of being away.

Again Welcome...
