Looking for some opinions here...Yesterday the wife and I went to an indoor range a did a little shooting. She wants a revolver so we rented a Ruger SP101 .357/.38 for her to shoot and I rented the Sig P220 and S&W Talon .45.
I have shot various .45's but not all of them that's out there. I have shot the Baby Eagle, a Kimber (can't remember which model), the Sig, the S&W, a Taurus and the Springfield XD.
I liked the Baby Eagle, the only thing I didn't like about it was its weight. The Kimber was a dream to shoot, but carries a hefty price tag. I didn't care for the S&W. I'm a smaller guy and it was bulky and the slide release was to far for my thumb to reach. Just felt uncomfortable in my hand, but it was a nice pistol. The Taurus was a decent gun, and the XD felt like I had a toy gun in my hand (lots of plastic), but I fell in love with the P220. Next week I'll go back and shoot their Wilson Combat they have for rent.
Right now I don't have the cash to drop on the Talon, Kimber or a Wilson. Really I don't have the cash for any of them (I do, but there are better things I could with it), however, I've been wanting a pistol for years and the wife said I could get one for my birthday next week. So I went and priced a new sig...809 out the door.
Anyone have any opinions on something I should shoot comparable to the Sig? I want a .45 and that's what I'll buy, but I don't want to rule anything out. Thanks ahead of time.

I have a Glock 23 .40 cal. It is a very nice piece. Light, easy to strip and clean and shoots like a dream and very accurate. I would not hesitate to buy anything Glock sells. I also have a S&W .38 concealed hammer with laser sight. Nice pocket pistol and easy for the ladies to handle.
Have had .38's, 9mm's and recently bought a Walther PPK 380. Like the 380. Nice size, shoots straight and breaks down fairly quick. Not a gun nut though.
I have almost every gun mentioned in this thread except the SP, baby eagle & the Talon..
All of them are good but I'm a 1911 guy whether it be Colt, Springfield, Kimber, Auto-Ordnance, Federal Ordnance, etc etc etc..
I competed in USPSA Competition for many years, built my own Limited (stock style) and super modified Compensated guns,,, and the gun of choice in the sport is the 1911..
It's kinda thought of like this,, if there was a better gun for fast combat-style competition,, all those competitors would be using it..
If I couldn't have a 1911 I'd use my Glock..
Have a ball picking out your Birthday present whatever it is..

I've got a Glock 21SF .45 and a Kimber Royal II .45.
The Glock was very reasonable at $549 and is a nice shooter that my wife can handle. She can shoot the .357 Ruger GP100 very well and I like the no latches to fool with Glock for her. Pick it up and pull the trigger until it's empty 14 shots later. The Glock is very safe. 3 internal safe mechanisms have to be overcome in order for it to fire. It will only fire if the safety on the trigger is depressed and the trigger is fully to the rear.
I like the Kimber, but I am more used to slide releases and grip safeties. I shot a lot of rounds through the 1911 when I was a coach on the rifle range in MCAS Cherry Point and have always wanted one. The Colts cost more than the Kimber and had less features of the Kimber. Probably paying for the little horsey on the gun.
For the money, a Springfield Armory 1911 is probably a good buy. Not many custom features. It is a lot like the old issued .45's. The SA XD .45 is a pretty good deal also.
For a gun that you and the wife can shoot, the Glock is a pretty good deal.
A lot of people buy the 9mm because ammo is cheaper than the .45.

Thanks for the replies everyone. A lot of information to chew on here. The exchange on base had a Colt 1911 for a dollar more than the Sig. I'm going to have to go back to the range and rent a couple different 1911's.

Look at the Taurus PT745 PRO(S745 Millennium Pro). It is the smallest .45 that I could find and the price was $359.00 for the stainless slide. I usually don't recommend foreign brands, I am a Ruger man, but this gun is very well made and there is a lifetime warranty. Also, check out KelTec pistols. They make two models of 9mm and a .380 , among other guns. They are supposedly made in Florida. Their 9's are the smallest ones I could find. They also have a very good warranty. I had a Ruger that had similar dimensions to a 1911. The gun shot and handled good. What I did not like about it was the size and weight. It was not easily concealed.

I like S&W revolvers, and I am sold on them. Since you are looking into a semi-auto, though, I can tell you that I have always had good experiences with the 1911 variants. There are lots of upgrades available for this frame that you can do as money allows, and in the mean time its a great shooting gun, and a lot of fun. I can tell you from experience that I am NOT impressed with Taurus. Maybe the quality has gotten better in recent years, but I know of too many Taurus guns with problems that caused down time for their owners. One revolver, in particular, put me off Taurus forever. The timing was bad, sent back to Taurus, who supposedly honored the warranty and repaired the gun. It came back worse. It actually had fragments of the bullet breaking off at the forcing cone and coming out between the cylinder and the barrel. Sorry, no more Taurus for me. Buy American.
