I was just pumping some gas in the FLSTN and a strange bike pulls up next to me.John Wayne about 50 yrs ago unfolds hisself from this monstrous machine. The kid's about 21 and 6'7"-250#, at least. I'm 5'8" with my boots on and around 150#. "Evenin' Sir," he says. I reply"Howdy son, what the hell is that your ridin'." "It's a Honda blah blah somethin 1800. It's my first bike, and all I could afford. I really wan't a Harley, but just outside my price range. I am a preety big fella so could you give me some advice?"
"Well now son." says I, and we were away on a long discussion on the pros and cons.
You could have knocked me down with a feather. Who said the young uns aint got any respect? I pulled away from that gas station feeling all patriotic. How about that
I've had the same experience at the gas pump. Had a kid on a Honda apoligizing to me because he couldn't afford a Harley. What the hell can you say when faced with that kind of situation?

I remember doing the same thing back in the day when I like 17 and a guy pulled up next to me on a really nice Sportster. I was on my Kawasaki 200 which I bought used from money I earned mowing lawns. It was a good bike but I would have loved to have had that Sporty. Bought my first Harley ten years later...a 94' Fatboy with 3000 miles on it. Rode that bike for ten years.
Thirty years ago I bought my first bike, just months after leaving the nest. My mother would never let me close to them. I bought a Honda 500 for around $500 road that thing into the ground. As I got more miles under my belt and moved up in the tax bracket, I could finally afford the HD. I hear this every day. People I ride with (non HD riders) all talk about when they can afford a HD. And to the day my Mother is at witts end everytime I ride the 1000 miles home. See what she created.
I was stopped at a traffic light this summer, when this strapping young lad (must’ve been 6’8”- 250 Lbs) pulled up beside me with his big Vulcan 2000. He took one look at my Sportster, and put the kickstand down on the Kaw! He had a tear in his eye when he said: “Sir, I’m riding this piece of cr@p because it’s all I can affort… what I really want is a Harley! One just like yours! I’m not worthy of being on the same road with you let alone this intersection…. Let me make things right!”. What he did next surprised me, but made me feel so good! He ripped his tee shirt off his back, and stuffed it down the gas tank. He then lit the piece hanging and said to me: “I know it doesn’t make up for the insult of sharing the road with such a superior motorcycle as yours, but I hope it’s a start” and he walked away… the bike went up like a roman candle… I swear I seen the flag, Mount Rushmore and the HD badge all intertwined together in the cloud of smoke… I was left humbled and suddenly the meaning of life revealed itself to me! I felt 100 feet tall! For a moment, I actually forgot all of the girlster & Mini-Harley comments...then: “Honey…honey, wake up. It’s time to go to work”
Kinda of reminds me of the Honda drop at the Cabbage Patch at the Daytona rally. Anybody seen that? A Honda suspended from a crane and ceremoniously dropped every year. I guess some traditions just live on. I think it's all in fun these days but there was a time when the rivalry was taken seriously and it was to one's best interest not to park a metric on the main drag at some rallies. I guess that really we have come a long ways in realizing that it's not what you ride, it's how you present yourself that is all that is important these days.
whenever I hear " really wanted this/that but couldn't afford it" I wonder have they never heard of used? If you "really" want it and with some diligence one can find a nice deal, maybe 3-4 years old in nice shape, no? H
Yeah, sorta puts this little imaginative story into perspective doesn't it? I think "BcknBlk" is bang on... why would someone on a $14,000 bike say to someone on a $7000 bike: "It's my first bike, and all I could afford."??? Doesn't add up!
