Default Black Wrinkle Paint

Hey all,

Anyone have experience painting engine parts with Wrinkle Black spray? Such as VHT or Krylon? After being told to have my jugs and heads powdercoated it would be $650 without the rocker box assemblies. I have to find a cheaper alternative. Concerned about durabilty, finish and heat resistance. Any help would be appreciated. Botz

Thumbs up Black Wrinkle Paint

Have had good luck with those brands. Look for "AUTO" engine paint. Parts must be "clean" and "grease" free. You'll also have to use primer. If you don't like it, then powder coat. Nothing gained Nothing lost.

Thumbs up Vht

Botz, I used the VHT wrinkle on my Evo 4 years ago, and its great stuff. The jugs and heads came out looking new, and still look great. Make sure all oil and/or grease is removed from the parts before you apply, and tape it up and mask it off real well. Once complete, your biggest challenge is whether to knock the paint off the ends of the cooling fins or not.

Trigger,

Did you bake the parts afterwards? Im hearing the wrinkle works best if baked on at around 200 degrees. Just curious. Thanks. Mike

Hey, botz, I used pj-1's brand, and it worked good and looks great. It was slow to wrinkle, but it was painted at a lower temp than it should've been. I also had two droplights aimed on 'em to help in drying.

I used 1/8 masking tape from a body shop to tape off the cylinder fin edges.

Take care, good luck...

Botz,

If you have a spare oven I would bake it. Dont use the one you cook in.
If not it will cure as you ride. It will take a little longer and it may not come out as even. With the wrinkle you dont need to be as concerned about it being even.

Also be careful not to have hoses or wire harness touching. My breather hose worked its way through the paint in one of my rocker covers. Motor moved hose did not" it worn through".

Botz, I did bake mine in a buddy's oven in the garage. DO NOT use the wife's oven for this operation. It will trash the oven and stink up the house. The finish was baked on hard once the parts cooled. I used a Dremel to knock the paint off the fins and polish them, but 94s idea on the tape sounds like a viable alternative. It took me FOREVER with the Dremel to get the fins the way I wanted them.

HEy 94....

That taping the fins is a nightmare. My lower back hurts from leaning over the dang thing. Hope it looks good when done. Tried a test piece today. No heat. Room temp. Very slow to wrinkle and kinda looks weird. Will wait 'til tomorrow and see what it looks like. Later. Botz

When I taped off the fins, it went okay. Took a while, for sure. I had 1/8 inch 3m brand blue tape. What was so hard? Fatigue?

94,

Using same tape as you. Easy to apply but my lower back which is still a bit messed up from the wreck started acting up. I think the height of the bench was just wrong for this project. I'll live. I think heat will be needed for the wrinkle finish. Piece I did just looks bad. Botz

Well, woke up to a surprise. The test piece looks 100% better after curing overnight. Still gonna try a test with my two big worklights. Although this may do. Botz
