Default HD Garage Door Opener

For a long time, the biggest pain about riding was pushing my cycle out into the driveway, then going back inside to hit the button & close the door. Coming home was even worse; I'd park out in the street, fumble for the key to the front door, go open the garage door, then have to start the cycle again to get it up the driveway and into the garage.

Then I found the HD Garage Door Opener.

Hands down, one of the best accessories I ever picked up. Installed it on my Softail a few years back; when I got the Electra, it was one of the first things I added on.

Wires to the headlight; uses the high-beam switch to activate. 1 flip to high-beam and back to low, and it's like you shouted "Open Sesame". The garage is open for you to pull right in, and you never even took your hands off the bars.

That is a great accessory! and it works on electric gate openers too !!!! It will open both your gate, and your garage door with the right set-up.

I've been interested in the gizmo for a while. Was it a DIY accessory or did a dealer install it? If so, how much labor?

Pat -

I installed both myself. Difficulty is determined by what model you are installing on.

For example, on the Electra Glide it was super easy; once I had the fairing off it took less than half an hour, since obviously all the wiring I needed to get to was under the fairing. It helps that the factory already ran an AUX 12V line up to the fairing for various accessories.

The Softail was a little more work. The transmitter (about the size of a business card) actually mounts on the rear swingarm; from there I had to run the power & ground wires up to the seat pan, land the power wire into the fuse box (that was a pain), and then run the two switch wires under the tank and all the way up to the headlight to splice into the high and low beam wires.

I can't imagine a dealer spending more than an hour installing one of these.

Default Key ring fob

I bought one at Home Depot that you wire in to the manual button terminal the same as the wall switch. I plug the receiver into the 110 outlet for the opener and mount it on the ceiling. I carry the fob on my bike key ring that I clip to my belt loop when I ride. Seems like the whole thing was about $50.

About the only problem I have is sometimes when I am sitting down and bend over to put my boots on I will push the button. Might need to lose a couple of pounds.

When I leave I can push one button to open and the same when I return. The range is at least 50 feet.
