Doug Danger gives the thumbs up before launching off this ramp during his rattlesnake jump at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip.
The 2017 Sturgis Rally flew by at a frenetic pace. Last time we checked in we had just spent the day at Crazy John’s Invitational Drag Races, the RSD Super Hooligan bash, topped ff with some late night rambling around The Chip. The next day we hit up the Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show which continues to be one of the most prestigious shows in Sturgis. This year’s contest carried on the tradition with a strong field of competitors. Game Over Cycles won the crowd over with “The World’s First Tattooed Motorcycle” which is actually a motorcycle/sidecar combo. All of its intricate artwork was tattooed by hand, including its tires, and the design sports plenty of steampunk accents. But it was Hawke Lawshe of Columbia Falls, Montana who won “Best of Show” honors at the 29th annual Sturgis show. In addition to claiming top honors, the Rat’s Hole also awarded him a six day all-expenses paid trip to the Swiss Custom Touring Show in Zurich, Switzerland. From there we shot straight over to the Buffalo Chip’s amphitheater just in time to watch Doug Danger fly through the air with the greatest of ease during his “Rattlesnake Jump.” Granted, the number of rattlesnakes in the pit may have been below expectations, nonetheless Danger’s jump itself exceeded expectations as he cleared the ramp and then some before sticking the landing. The night wrapped up with a twin-bill of George Thorogood and Blink-182, the diversity of the acts filling the amphitheater with an eclectic mix of young and old alike. Somehow we also found time to run over to the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame to wish our friend Shadow and the team at Thunder Press congratulations on its 25th anniversary.
