Brand-New 2018 Harley-Davidson CVOs and Specials
Caught up in the whirlwind of Harley’s new Softails, it would be easy to overlook another selection of bikes that were also unveiled today. The big dogs of The Motor Company’s offerings, those with the highest price tags and the biggest stock performance ratings, are the CVO (Custom Vehicle Operations) models. Each year, Harley usually introduces three models that receive the royal treatment from the CVO team, the American V-twin equivalent of Mercedes-Benz AMG motor-busters—backroom steroid injections like those rumored to have been taking place in Major League Baseball, peaking in the early 2000s (granted, the CVO squad is on the right side of the law, but the shroud of a clandestine team of mad engineers working incognito has its allure).
The 2018 model year brings with it three brand-new H-D CVOs: the CVO Limited, the CVO Road Glide, and the CVO Street Glide. Harley’s 2017 CVOs featured the 114″ Milwaukee-Eight motor, packing more punch than the Touring models equipped with the then-new Milwaukee-Eight 107. Well this year, buried beneath the news of the disappearing Dyna line and some radical Softail changes, Harley’s CVO squad had the Milwaukee-Eight training like it was bulking season.
The results? Only the biggest production motor to date, a 117″ Milwaukee-Eight. And there’s a Stage IV Screamin’ Eagle kit available to boot. Call it a mild day for Harley-Davidson news.
Some interesting quirks to the lineup: the CVO Road Glide is the only one of the three new models to be equipped with a 21″ front wheel, lending a more custom look when rolling off the assembly line. The CVO Street Glide and CVO Limited roll on a 18-incher and 17-incher, respectively. And while a vast multitude of colors is available as always, the CVO Limited is the only model to be offered with the 115th Anniversary paint.
Harley has three Specials slated for the 2018 model year, though the Road King Special was announced months ago. We currently have one in our stable here at the office, but that’s already old hat! Here’s what Harley announced today: the 2018 Street Glide Special and the Road Glide Special.
Black is never going out of style, especially not when the Bar & Shield are still rolling out blacked-out baddies like these two Specials. With an eye toward the production custom, Harley has blacked-out the wheels, forks, Milwaukee-Eight 107 motor, and pipes. Though if you remain a shine enthusiast, the Road Glide and Street Glide will still have plenty of chrome for all your glaring needs.
