Tool Review: Doyle Wire Pliers
With all the talk of wiring in this issue (AI Garage 120), I figured it would only be appropriate to continue that theme to the Product Review section as well. John Frank showed us some great tips for fixing a wiring harness in this issue, and these new Doyle Electrician’s Multi-Purpose Pliers from Harbor Freight tools would do the trick for the task. Doyle is one of the many house-name brands available from Harbor Freight, and the quality is on par with the big name brand tool companies. I think Harbor Freight has done a commendable job in stepping up the game on it’s various lines of hand tools. These multi-purpose pliers are ideal for everything from wire stripping and cutting, to crimping on new electrical connectors. The electrical pliers from Doyle combine a long nose for grabbing and looping wire. The tips of the pliers have strong serrations for a good grip on whatever you are holding.
Just beneath the tip, a built-in wire stripper removes insulation cleanly and precisely. I like that the wire stripper section is clearly laser-marked with the wire gauge sizes, so you can strip insulation without damaging the wire’s core. The wire stripper works on 8-18 gauge solid and 10-20 gauge stranded wires.

Then there’s a heavy duty curved cutting blade for cutting heavy gauge solid or stranded wire. The crimper portion of the tool is built into the under side of the jaws for good leverage and crimps connectors, lugs, and terminals onto wire.
You’ll also notice two small threaded holes in the rotating portion of the pliers. Those are to easily cut machine screws in either 6-32 or 8-32 thread sizes.
The pliers are constructed from high strength steel for maximum durability with rust protection for reduced corrosion and increased tool life. The handle on these pliers is made of a dual density material for comfort and provide a good grip. As soon as I picked them up, I could tell these pliers weren’t a typical flimsy stamped steel wire crimper tool. These have some heft, and feel sturdy in your hand. Best of all, it is backed by a 100% lifetime guarantee. AIG
